Four Zones, Twelve Devices
Cover the approach, the entry, the interior, and the response. Skip a zone and the rest of the system just records what happened.
Zone 01 · Outside
Yard, driveway, side gate
Most break-ins start before the door. Cover the approach, not just the porch.
9.0/10
YardGuard 2K Outdoor Camera
A 2K outdoor camera with a genuinely useful person/vehicle filter and local storage that keeps working when the internet doesn’t. The mount screws into siding without stripping.
8.8/10
FloodBeam Security Light Cam
Two motion floodlights and a camera in one fixture, with separate aim for light and lens. It lights the driveway before the app notification lands.
8.5/10
DriveSense Motion Alert
A driveway sensor that pings the hub instead of your phone directly, so it keeps working when the cloud is down. Adjustable range, no false alarms from cats.
Zone 02 · Doors
Front, side, garage
The doorbell is the camera everyone sees. The deadbolt is the one that matters.
9.2/10
PorchEye Video Doorbell
A wired doorbell with a head-to-toe view, clear two-way audio, and package detection that doesn’t fire every time a leaf moves. Local recording is the default.
8.9/10
BoltSmart Deadbolt Lock
A keypad deadbolt with a physical key backup, auto-lock, and a bolt that actually seats in an older frame. The app stays out of the way until you need it.
8.4/10
EntryKey Backlit Keypad
A standalone keypad for the garage or side door, with one-time codes for guests and a backlight you can read in the dark. No hub required.
Zone 03 · Inside
Hallways and rooms
Interior cameras are for peace of mind, pets, and confirming an alert — not for covering windows.
8.8/10
RoomWatch Indoor Camera
A compact indoor camera with a physical privacy shutter and local storage. The motion zones are easy to draw and actually reduce notifications.
8.6/10
PIR Motion Sensor
A pet-tolerant motion sensor with a two-year battery and a mount that swivels without tools. It paired with our hub in under a minute.
8.7/10
DoorReed Entry Sensor
A slim door/window sensor that reports open, closed, and left-open. The adhesive held through a humid summer; the screw option is in the box.
Zone 04 · Alerts
Hub, siren, smoke, safe
A camera records. An alarm interrupts. You need both, and they should work without the cloud.
9.0/10
HubOne Alarm Base
The brain of the setup: local automation, a battery backup, and a siren loud enough to matter. It keeps running routines when the Wi-Fi drops.
8.9/10
SmokeGuard Detector
An interconnected smoke/CO detector that announces which room triggered it. The test button is one press, and the battery door doesn’t need a screwdriver.
8.6/10
SafeVault Home Safe
A bolted-down safe with a mechanical keypad backup and enough interior for documents, drives, and a small valuables box. The door swings on a real hinge.
Coverage Gaps Most Setups Miss
Five checks to run before you add another camera. More devices is not the same as more coverage.
Two cameras pointing at the same driveway is one camera of coverage. Draw your floor plan and mark the gaps.
The side gate and garage door are the two most-missed approaches. Walk your own perimeter at night before buying.
A camera without local storage is a livestream, not evidence. Check what happens when the internet drops.
Test every sensor’s battery and signal path after installation. A sensor that misses once is a sensor you stop trusting.
Do not rely on a smart lock’s app alone. Keep the physical key and a keypad code that works offline.
How we score security gear. Each score weighs coverage value, install effort, app reliability, and whether the device still works after a power or Wi-Fi outage. No system prevents every crime; we do not sell, install, or monitor alarm systems, and nothing here is a security guarantee.
How We Test
A simple, repeatable process — the same for every product we review.
We Buy It Ourselves
Every product is purchased at retail price. Brands don’t get a say or a preview of our results.
We Live With It
Real homes, real routines — we install, we leak-test, we wear it, we break it. If it can’t survive real use, it doesn’t score well.
We Give One Verdict
One clear score out of 10, with the honest trade-offs shown. No vague “best-in-class” fluff.
We Re-Test Yearly
Re-reviewed every year. When something better comes along, we update the score — even if it means demoting a favorite.
How this site earns money
We earn through affiliate commissions and display ads — at no cost to you. Commissions never influence our verdicts, and we never accept payment for a good score. See our Disclosure.
